Oath of the Hornguard/Rhylan of the Living

Posted on September 26, 2025 in Steel-Realms

Steel Realms

The Oath of the Living is both the Pledge of Ryhlan the Living and the Oath of the Hornguard – the oath the all members of The Hornguard of Rhyl take in defense of their job to keep the lands of Rhyl safe and warn their inhabitants, even at the cost of their own lives.

Rhyl Culture | Territories & Fiefs | Features | North Gate Garrison | Map

Defining Ideal: The Grand Duchy of Rhyl has been "The Shield of the North" in the wars of The Noble East vs. The Broken Lands for thousands of years as well as stradling the crossroads of many powers and maintaining a tense peace. The Chronicle of Rhyl shows it first as many fiefdoms of 'The Lands of Rhylan' (CY 5500's), then a united kingdom (CY 5980), then as a duchy of the High Kings' kingdom of Gladnor (CY 6514). All citizens in the north take the pledge of Rhylan the Living.

Culture: Rhylian ( 'rill', 'rillian') locales have locally flavored experiences, but unless noted, follow general Territories and Fiefdoms properties and all share Common Culture - languages, Character Experience, institutions, Law, etc.

Pledge of Rhylan the Living

Although not a Sworn Oath, EVERY person coming to fight at North Gate Garrison and EVERY citizen in the lands of Rhyl is taught the Pledge of Rhylan the Living. The pledge is one that acknowledges that the politics and disagreements among those within Rhylan may have merit, fundamentally they are meaningless if the Lich Lords win and the “Fangs of frost bite into the lands of the living.” If the Hornguard of Rhyl asks, all must set aside their disputes and answer the call for defense. If immediate circumstances dictate, all must unite to defend the land and generations of the living to come. This priority, above all else, must be crystal clear to those who live on death’s doorstep separated only by a single season.

The last reference is to The Autumn Wall, the defense of North Gate Garrison. The The Rimeguard of Kaald also take a similar pledge.

Additionally, as part of the pledge, the citizens of Rhyl “Acknowledge the value and necessity of preserving the Wylden quality.”

This territory is considered Dominion of the High King Lands means the rulers have given the Sworn Oath of High King’s Service to the High King of the Steel Realms.

Faith in the Weald Community of Rhysvelaugh

Posted on September 25, 2025

Steel Realms

The faith of the Weald community is centered on the Wyld Faith and Green Church of the Steel Realms Wyld faith predominantly, having followers for the major presences of the Elemental Consorts, Gaia the mother & Darupet the father. Additionally, each Weald has a sacred animal protector that the identity and symbol for the Weald is strongly tied to.

Protector Spirit of the Weald: Scrofa the BOAR – This Totemic Spirit of The Wyld has multiple Shrines in the Weald. Outsiders are not welcome at these. Tts senior members are present for major decision making and Defense of the Weald.

The animal is welcomed and fostered in the community and its symbol/likeness is used extensively. This part of the Common Faerie Faith in the Steel Realms. Additionally, the The Small Faerie Folk of the Sprites are still present in the northern Wealds and are sacred to the elves there – they are used as scouts and watchers all over the Weald and its surrounding lands.

There is still some veneration of The Rimbus, especially by the small faerie folk allies.
