The Elven Weald of Archaezeon was a rare Elven Weald in a remote mountain gorge with little forest or meadows. A massive underground river spilled out in a basin on its edge. Irrigation was carved and the meadows grew food. The dwellings were all carved into cliffs and caverns. When Altair fell, their valley was flooded and stone pillars and doors smashed. The exact location lies buried still – though many an adventuring band has tried.

The History of Altair Pass and the history of the Grand Barony of Altair is intertwined as the History of the Grand Barony of Altair & Altair Pass.
Originally the High King forced the creation and maintenance of this as a means of moving supplies and soldiers into the Hinterland soft the north from the north heartlands after the Lich Lords took control of most of Dundaria. The pride of the region was the massive Altair Castle guarding the passage into the pass. It rose to a population of 50,000. It was repeatedly attacked by minions of the Lich Lords to prevent the movement of troops. Since CY 6909 the castle lies in ruins, brought down by the legendary blade of Stone Cutter. The hero wielding it was able to tear asunder the walls of Altair and rescue his bride from the evil clutches of Wehtsaq, called King of Ghouls. He had turned a large portion of the populace into ghouls that were ravaging the lands in every direction.
The Kalurians come out of North Pines and sweep across the land, killing all humanoids and undead and the ghoul infection is ended.

Altair Pass was a crossroads of the north at one point. It provided east-weast access in the Northern Heartlands AND a winding pass through the mountains into the Northern Hinterlands that was open through most of the year. Altair Castle once stood proud at the south side of Altair Pass – the best and least expensive way through the north Altain Mountains to South Cut and onto the Aaldian Plateau when it was open. The area fell into disrepair when the Grand Barony of Altair fell in CY 6909.
The Altain Corridor: Kroith Passage was once the gateway between North Pines and the Grand Duchy of Rhyl and the Altair Pass to the west that granted access to the western Freelands of the North of the Northern Heartlands.
Balient’s Breach was more dangerous and expensive than Altair Pass, but was an alternative until the Grand Barony fell and the pass became a wasteland and impossible due to the evil spirits that refused to rest – hostile to Lich Lord minion and the living alike. The pass and lands of the barony are a frozen wasteland of roaming spirits, broken bones and everyone that once lived is encased in hoarfrost. Though the ancient fallen barony is on the south side, its frozen covering makes all consider it part of the Hinterlands rather than the Heartlands.
It is cursed, and the very ground swallows the undead, and the biting cold eventually killing anything that lives. Only the spirits of the restless dead wander its confines.
Somewhere in the ruins around the Altair Pass is the Altairian Mine – The namesake of the region and its primary income source at one time.
