Rimehall – Home of the ‘Frost-Makers of Rhylan’ (Ducal magi of Rhyl)

Posted on April 25, 2026 in Steel-Realms

Steel Realms
Rimehall (also known as “The Ice Locker” by its enemies) is a lodge/hall built in CY 7497 to house Erasan the White and his four original apprentices. All pledged ‘eternal fealty’ to the Grand Duke of Rhyl in exchange for a secure place to practice magic and build legacy. A mutual defense concordance was made and refined over time. They handle special projects, explorations, observation, and collate mystical knowledge in service of the Ducal powers. They are allowed to arrest and detain in service to their charter. They have the most active role in overseeing the mystical vaults and access to the Deepstone Archive of Rhylan.

They are not a strict Occult Orders of the Steel Realms, as they do not take on any outsiders or have any expanded mission or authority outside the confines of the Grand Duchy of Rhyl or direct service to its Duke.

Defining Ideal: The Grand Duchy of Rhyl has been "The Shield of the North" in the wars of The Noble East vs. The Broken Lands for thousands of years as well as stradling the crossroads of many powers and maintaining a tense peace. The Chronicle of Rhyl shows it first as many fiefdoms of 'The Lands of Rhylan' (CY 5500's), then a united kingdom (CY 5980), then as a duchy of the High Kings' kingdom of Gladnor (CY 6514). All citizens in the north take the pledge of Rhylan the Living.

Culture: Rhylian ( 'rill', 'rillian') locales have locally flavored experiences, but unless noted, follow general Territories and Fiefdoms properties and all have shared culture - languages used, Character Experience, institutions, Law, etc; Most Settlements includes the basic experience of Characters of the Steel Realms.

Erasan was a magus of considerable talent. His skills were never considered to be among the most destructive power, his powers were more oriented to protection. He had amassed a considerable amount of wealth in his time, and magical trinkets. He sought a safe place for the legacy of his son and family. He had served magi of various orders, explored many areas of the north and survived, even dealt with some of the entities in the magical prison of the northlands. The Ducal family had been served by a string of mages that proved more interested in leveraging their connection than keeping the duke safe. It was expensive to have watchers on the watchers and so on. The opportunity was cemented when Erasan requested that one of the Justicars of Balthazaar truth-tell their intentions.

Primary Charter

Purpose: They provide mystical security and consultation for the Ducal house of Rhyl. Members are oath bound to obey their obligations – any order by the Duke of Rhyl must be obeyed.

Size: There can be only a single master of the order, 4 journeymen, and each journeyman can have no more than two apprentices. Most of these titles are passed on by blood. If there is no heir, lower ranks are promoted by order of the Duke of Rhyl.

Raspberry Tea Fields of Millhaven (Rhyl)

Posted on April 24, 2026 in Steel-Realms

Steel Realms

The legendary Raspberry Tea Fields of Millhaven are located southwest of Millhaven Heath of the South Reedland Stretch territory. This area has always been very lucrative to those who lay claim to it – it is one of the most profitable crops that is distinct to the north.

Harvest Houses: The fields themselves have a multitude of foremen and workers that are both permanent (about 300 scattered over an area) and seasonal (using dormitories) at harvest time. Each ‘house’ has donkeys and carts, wheel barrows, and supply sheds as well as drying houses and other storage facilities.

North Tea of Rhyl (“Solavia Leafs”)

Posted on April 24, 2026 in Steel-Realms

Steel Realms

The northern teas of Rhyl are known as the “Solavia Leafs” because those that are exported are almost all dried and shipped out of Solavia’s Landing. What is delivered to the Autumn Wall is almost all done at a secure place in City of Klyben.

The southern teas popular in the central heartlands and kingdom of Gladnor are not as popular north of the Beyne River. Within the Grand Duchy of Rhyl, support of the more earthy and distinct teas of the north is considered patriotic. They are not exported south much beyond the central heartlands, as they are very specific to the palettes of the north. There are a few distinct pure and blended tea products of the north, though not nearly as much as those grown in the warmer climates of the south.

The elves of the northern climes are not fond of the northern teas at all, and prefer gentler sweet and/or floral brews.

History

Contention: There have been armed clashes of the Raspberry Tea Fields of Millhaven, between the forces of Grand Duchy of Rhyl and the Northern Merchant Cities. Since it was sacked as part of the War of Rundleman’s Revenge in CY 9041, there have been raids and skirmishes and ‘claims’ by various families and organizations since it was a wild area that was claimed without formal declaration by Rhyl as just a continuation of traditional Rhylian families working the nearby land.

History of Clallum’s Cross (Rhyl)

Posted on April 20, 2026 in Steel-Realms

Steel Realms

The History of Clallum’s Cross in the Grand Duchy of Rhyl has its origins in the old trade outpost of Bevare that became the thriving exclave town Clallums Cross based on a typical Urban Planning and Architecture in Umbak. The History of Clallum’s Cross is synonymous with the Kuernsi Family of the locale as the families and trade interests are owne d and operated as the same under Umbakian cultural norms.

Trade Outpost of Brevare

When an Umbakian family trade run business was first allowed to operate in the Grand Duchy of Rhyl in CY 7912, it was limited to the Trade Outpost of Brevare. Originally, it was meant as a place of refuge for the many who had Umbakian culture and blood in the area. A place where Umbakian order and culture could be undisturbed. The business ventures grew over time and between those serving on The Autumn Wall and serving the Church of Light, a permanent charter was made that made it nearly a full exclave with an unprecedented measure of autonomy. At that point, its population was capped and the full rights of township provided in CY 7965.

A documented copy of the vast majority of Umbakian legal and social dealings can be found in sealed record vaults in the town. This is overseen by scribes of the Kuernsi Family.

The Kuernsi Family was the one that advocated for and based on a typical Urban Planning and Architecture in Umbak.

Dunstrand Rising Living World CAMPAIGN CHRONICLE >> Dunstrand Rising is a Living World campaign set in Grand Duchy of Dunstrand in the Steel Realms of the [Fantasy] Steel Realms.

CY 9182 Clallums Cross was struck by bugbears thought to be extinct and ogres during a Festival of the City. They came up with Rock Worms in a place they now call the Philbert’s Cave. It has been warded with a new mystic seal from the efforts of the office of the Reclamation of the Wyld – at the very least it will send a warning to the nearest Briarwood or lightbringer shrine (Clallums Cross); It is triggered by the corruption the rock worms leave.

The CY 9182 Festival of the City was smashed by the invaders at midnight. What was once an open and normally safe place now needed a robust defense. A tower keep was built to harbor refugees.

Scarce Knowledge / Hard Difficulty

Grim Remembrance: In the town is a wall still standing that shows a large hole – a hole made by an ogre crashing through it in the CY 9182 Festival of the City attack as a reminder to why a 1m thick wall refuge needed to be built. There was also a walled garden where bugbears mass executed prisoners by pushing them up against the wall and bashing their skulls into pieces with morning stars – the wall was moved to a place of remembrance, and each section that has the pock marks from the morning star is displayed.

Rare Knowledge / Very Hard Difficulty

Targeted Raid: The true reason for the “raid” in CY 9182 is that a Justicaar from the Sacrarium of Rhylan was coming through. He was killed by three ogres. The whole team was led by an orc of exceeding cruelty referred to as “Rip-Face” – having a massive scar on the right side of his face. He managed to live and retreat with a remaining band of goblins and a couple bugbears. They were driven out when a knight named Sir Jean Philbert – in service on The Autumn Wall – rallied his countrymen and drove them back. He was wounded bad enough that he returned to Umbak, though was given a record for a full tour at North Gate Garrison for his bravery here.
