Soldiers and Military Training (cultural perspective)

Steel Realms
Military Service in the realms is much the same, whether serving in the High King‘s own standing army (not just the peace-keeping Pacification Garrisons), a local lords’, or an organization with a military arm trained to fight for their cause, as a guard, watchman, etc. The soldier’s life is the life of many folk of the realms as enlisted military, mercenary, or volunteer. The Law of the High King exist and generally governs all interactions with institutions; This is often adjudicated by members of the World Watchers. Those serving in the High King’s army and any military of Umbak will receive Crown Tags.

When not dealing with internal resources and competition, the folk of the realms face constant danger from the Darklands in the east, the Lich Lords in the north, and the Dust Brothers and broken cultures of the southlands. A soldier can always find work – local lords keep their own forces and supplement with mercenaries when needed. Mercenaries are, aside from the guilded/bonded aspects, soldiers for hire. Almost no soldier, except elite units of the High King’s standing army, is expected to take a full Sanctioned (sworn) Oath of Fealty to the High King. Oaths have power in the Steel Realms – most soldiers take a mundane oath of service. Where different cultures mix, the trade tongue of Mercat is taught to all as a common form of communication.
