Encounters in the Grand Duchy of Rhyl. These may include some or all Encounters in the Steel Realms (Ustermaya). A Plague of Hags in Rhyl

Posted on September 25, 2025 in Steel-Realms

Steel Realms

In the Great Forest of Rhyl, there is something that has drawn an inordinate amount of strange creatures from the Faeywyld, specifically the evil Hags of legend; This has been dubbed the “A Plague of Hags“.

Commoners Perspective

Eveybody knows about dem hags! They come at night to steal your breath and dreams – life they take back to der lairz to feed on! Sometimes dey take the babies and swap them with other… things. Always creeping in the shadows of the forests and da rocks of da hills. Lookin’ for victims to corrupt and cause choas and madness in the lands of the north. Keep your holy symbols above da cradle. It can’t be helped, but that land gives a great bounty, and the hags ride that powerful life-force in a thin veil between worlds. They come here for the things they c’not get in Faeywyld.

Chronicle/Facts of the Plague of Hags

Knowledge is broken down by ease of discovery/availability & Meticulous Record Keeping may improve usability; Any attempt to know more than what's Pervasive will require a reference, source, knowledge, check, or access to someone who can get or provide either of these. Specific Lores may increase the chance of knowing specific elements.

For those native to or long-dwelling in the region, ALL Common Knowledge may be Pervasive.

The Wylden Hag Hunters of The Wyldes of the Heartlands form a primitive Wylde Bond with the northern forests. From this they can smell the blood of the Hag’s Hatred of Rhyl and those bonded to them from a mile away.

Common Knowledge / Easy Difficulty

For those native to or long-dwelling in the region, ALL Common Knowledge may be Pervasive.

With the proximity of the Lich Lords’ armies and constant pressure on the living, there seems to be more raiding and misery by Hags done west into the Freelands sand The Wyldes.

Kinsaerel’s Weave are items specifically created to deal with this problem.

Uncommon Knowledge / Average Difficulty

The Har’ahdu Cunaigh – Aelfpath of Helca twines through the Great Forest of Rhyl. The Hags are thought to prowl this broken route through access in the great forest, looking for lost souls.

There are rumors that the High Priestess of Aerna has some special sway into turning the A Plague of Hags‘s attention west.

Scarce Knowledge / Hard Difficulty

Stories exist of Hag’s Hatred stealing a few dryad offspring in Rhyl over the ages and corrupting them as their next generation are present in some tales.

Rare Knowledge / Very Hard Difficulty

The Dew Gate in the Navel of the Great Forest of Rhyl pulls through some of the wintery weather, dumping it in the Faeywyld as a roaming storm of sleet and snow, and drawing the ire of those that make their home there, accounting for A Plague of Hags in The Grand Duchy of Rhyl.

Blood Leaf – “The Hand of the Doget”: The war leader that handles incursions or must work with outsiders to coordinate efforts. The name is actually an office, occupied by several over time.

Defending this is considered part of the Weald’s duty.
