Lighting and Heat in The Steel Realms

Lighting

Typical lighting is done with candles and oil. Oil lamps are crude and often smokey in more remote places where cleaner oil is hard to get. Lighting on a mass scale is only done in a few places. In Gwinn, the whaling industry provides the island and its exclaves whale oil for light (magically treated to burn slower in some places). Forge Sweat can provide intense lighting, but is mostly used in military/combat situations. Elven Lake Lamps are expensive, but effective bio-luminescence from the heart of the Elven Wealds of the Steel Realms.

Lamasoil Lamps

Where the refinements allow it, Dwarven, human, and Ducateon make Lamasoil Lamps that are intended to be stationary and use the safe lamasoil loam brick; The flame is yellowed, but created a diffused glow creating more ambient light and burning at 1/3 the rate of normal oil lamps. These are meant for homes and business, not large commercial or mobile use where traditional oil is more appropriate. Lamasoil Lamps are made from a few places in the realms where the soil soaks in specific chemicals and they can be treated by the Lightbringer techno-clergy, Mizran forge-treaters, or Merkaine’s fire-starters.

  • A single brick lamp will burn for 6 hours with one flask of oil, and illuminates double what a torch will.
  • Lamasoil Lamps last about 10 years before needing to be replaced. Forge Oil
