Helmands Tract (of Crestwold)
Also known as Helmandi’s Tract, Helmands Tract is a raised settlement area on the Gnaefor Stretch along a section of the Gnaefor Ridge rising on its north side – part of the Barony of Crestwold inside of the Earldom of Bar-Innis within the Grand Duchy of Dunstrand. Towering over it, on the Gnaefor Ridge liine above, is the ruins of Helmandi Keep.
The area defined by the tract is raised 1-0m-20m above the Aranafir Plain. There are three main streams that gather into the one, merging with the largest of them, Stelwick Creek – which feeds into the Murchart River and creates the wetlands of the plain between it and the river itself.
Rulership: Appointed and hereditary “Minister of Helmands Tract” (administrative – old Umbakian traditional title); justice administered by the Sheriff of Gnaefor located in Helmund-by-the-Black.
Capital: Helmund-by-the-Black
Population: 5,000 approximately
Features of Note in the Helmands Tract
Helmandi Uplands: This is a jutting high point along the Gnaefor Ridge. It is named for the Umbakian Helmandi family that settled the area initially.
- Helmand’s Ascent: The ancient and now broken switch back that rises to the top of the Gnaefor Ridge’s uplands and to the ruins of Helmandi Keep.
Places of Note in the Helmands Tract
Helmand By the Black
The center of commerce, activity, population and production in the area. Raised small valleys and a short wide plain on which the town is located keep it from flooding (though it can be isolated in the rainy season).
Aernafir Bridge: This marks the southern most border of the tract and its lifeline to the outside world in the rainy season.
Careyos Fording: A place of fording over Stelwick Creek thats perfect in the dry times of the year, and shaves a hour or more of travel.
Mill House: A millers wheel and millstone runs off the head waters of Stelwick Creek.
