The strange tale is a cautionary one of taking shortcuts in the pursuit of power. A Druid named Ver, pursued a path to power. Some say he sought the power to cast down the undead of the north. Others say he merely sought power for himself. He convinced his followers – The Men of Ver – to aid him in seeking forbidden knowledge as a shortcut and it went horribly wrong.A ritual went wrong and they were all consumed by its power. Madness drove them to violence upon their fellow dwellers in the northern heartlands of Rhyl. They sacked several villages and towns, their host growing. Then they vanished – falling upon themselves in an orgy of violence in some remote place and were never heard of again.
Vers’ Pity: Several accounts from the time who knew the druid and/or witnessed the path of destruction he wrought are compiled into “Vers’ Pity” and can be found in many collections in the North heartlands.

The druid Ver sought a shorter path to power, seeking the great Mother of Madness – Emrigga – through the spirit of Mog Creoch. He convinced his flock to follow him, promising them glory. The Men of Ver were corrupted. Their Wyld Faith was broken and twisted and they rampaged in a frenzy of violence, following the path of madness that destroyed and consumed all before them. Whatever truth of the power Ver sought, it was never delivered unto him. For months they sacked villages and towns in the north, always retreating eastward. One day, they simply stopped. Their camp nor any remains were ever found.
They gathered much treasure and captives. The few survivors that eluded their attacks in the burned out settlements spoke of a rallying cry of some ‘ascendancy’ that they were working towards. From all clues, it would have been a ceremony of great sacrifice. However, they vanished and were never heard from again.
Each attempt to search for them was met with confounding tracks, poor weather, monsters released from The Valley of Sighs, or just malaise and dissent.
It is related to a ritual found in Duchess Dementia, that calls upon Emrigga, a spirit of madness.
They carved the ritual chant of Smyo Pa from Duchess Dementia of Rastillions Diabolique onto each other’s stomachs, and drank the blood from these wounds. It is believed Ver himself came across a scroll of the ritual in his sojourns in the Lich Lords’ lands – a remnant of a desperate attempt to seek a power to stop them as they claimed their dominion.
