Minotaurs of the Steel Realms

Steel Realms

The dreaded Minotaur was the result of the Bronzefolk’s cult of strength and veneration of Modak, the great numinous spirit of bulls. The creatures were fierce warriors, possessed of the bloodlust of the Grollen, the intelligence of a human, and the strength of a bull.

There has been no record or sightings of a minotaur in thousands of years, and they are thought to be extinct. Some doubt they ever really existed in the first place, and are thought by many to be merely mythological constructs.

Pervasive Knowledge / Very Easy Difficulty

The dreaded Minotaur was the result of the Bronzefolk’s cult of strength and veneration of Modak, the great numinous spirit of bulls. The creatures were fierce warriors, possessed of the bloodlust of the Grollen, the intelligence of a human, and the strength of a bull. There has been no record or sightings of a minotaur in thousands of years, and they are thought to be extinct. Some doubt they ever really existed in the first place, and are thought by many to be merely mythological constructs.

Common Knowledge / Easy Difficulty

Since their creation, which was based on already ancient Bronzefolk lore, they have been seen in places sacred to Modak. Most die in battle, and over the years their bloodlust gets them into confrontations that bring about their demise…. but none has ever been observed dying of age.

The Horns of the Hornguard of Rhyl are made of Minotaur horns.

Uncommon Knowledge / Average Difficulty

The Sea-Kings even attempted to summon forth similar creatures of fiendish lineage from the depths of the abyss, and breed them in their dreaded Birthing Cauls. Though not “natural” minotaurs, they were successful in summoning them but not in breeding, their fiendish origins causing them to mutate and become more savage, primal, and less intelligent.

A Minotaurs true lifespan is about 400 years, and have Delayed Decrepitude. Most die in battle long before that.

Resonance Property: The horns of a minotaur had a resonance property that caused ceramic, glass and other similar structures to shatter in a radius from the blow. It has also made their horns valuable as actual war horns – when fashioned for this their sound carries much farther than normal.

Scarce Knowledge / Hard Difficulty

Current Population: Minotaurs were hunted to extinction outside of the far north and some that allied themselves with the Orrish in the Dark Lands. They feel isolated and abandoned by the folk of the Bronzelords, and avoid the populated areas of the Heartlands. A few small families fled to the hills of the Tolkisson Mountain Range and have persisted; Others have managed to make their home in The Black Fens and even some of the south where they are stigmatized less and ‘proper civilization’ has less sway.

Rare Knowledge / Very Hard Difficulty

Labyrinthian Confusion: The original minotaurs were brought forth from the consciousness of ancient Bronzefolk legends. They brought with them an effect which confused way finding in a radius around where they dwelt. Only the purposeful lumber and rush of the bull was excluded from its effects. It was said that the inhaling the breath of the minotaur could make the inhaler immune to its effects for a while. The strangeness this effect entailed was even said to spoil foodstuffs as even the natural processes of decay were confused.

Secrets of Bronze: While the minotaurs are not ‘the inheritors’ of the Bronzefolk, a few ideas and capabilities of the Lords of Bronze persist within their own culture now. They do make their own mystical Toprag weapons using Bronzefolk rituals, and these weapons are referred to as “Southern Toprag”.

  • Minotaurs can smell these armaments from up to a mile away; They are immune to the “Salt Edge” effects.

The Minotaur of The Black Fens mine some rare minerals and salts from the fens for their forges – from this they have managed to make a facsimile of Toprag armaments (“southern Toprag”) of their ‘founders’ – the Tribes of Bronze.
