The History and Tales of Richfield as a Territories and Fiefdoms of Dunstrand are chronicled by the ruling family. Richfield is the last domain to be carved out of the Grand Duchy of Dunstrand. Originally part of a strong western presence ruled directly by the Duke’s clan, the “disasters of Dunstrand” (the massive natural disasters caused by The Sundering) saw it buried beneath the swamp. Parts of it were once part of the “Sunset Lands” – territory held by the rulers of Sunset Castle in the Western Vale. After the disasters and swamp encroachment, it was nominally part of West Riven Run – though always contested by new settlers and Riverdans families), it was land untended for centuries, even as the swamp receded. Time has drained some of the land, and for those willing to accept the risk, it was worth the hassle to claim it. The land is slowly draining – causing endless small squabbles for the overly fertile flood plains. Perhaps a gradual uplift under what was once a fertile plain brought low in The Sundering will restore most of what was lost… no one knows for sure, but the land’s soil content and record harvests make it worth the effort to try.

Ruling Family History: The Urma family line which once ruled the Riverdan fiefdom of Benfreyim to the east ended when Viscount Nathand Hayes, a captain in the host of Count Badgericus I of West River Run, slaughtered the ruling family’s host in battle over river access and sacked the castle in CY 8211. Out of control mercenaries were blamed later. The Baron Veff of West River Run said control of them was lost after the Viscount had fallen in battle. Several were tried and hung in a behind-doors trial. The local Vernich family from the town of Minnestora, married into the the Dan-Urma branch (cousins of the last Lord Benfreyim), and bided their time… buying up lands in what was to become Richfield and keeping themselves out of the targets of the powerful enemies in West River Run. The combination of the local rulers and connection to Riverdan nobility gave much in the way of legitimizing their claim on the lands – though some rumors even persist marriage was likely forced on them by the victors. The sister of Sir Jeffrey Urma, Tina, married to Sir Robert Richfield, and with allies from Bar-Innis fought the host from West River county in CY 8301 and threatened open revolt unless the Duke granted the Richfield family the rights of the land on the north side of the river. After which the Richfield’s declared their territory a new domain of the Riverdans – though this was never recognized by any Duke or King. Since then they have been at constant battle from raids and aggressive trade practices with West River Run and distant claims from Riverdan families… the sole fact of the inhospitable nature of their lands allowing them to keep their freedom and prosper in their own way.
Although it had nominally been decaled a baronial territory of Dunstrand, it was a self proclaimed Earldom, on par with Bar-Innis. After the Civil War of Bar-Innis, it was recognized as its own Earldom, to stabilize it and remove it from play in the politics of Bar-Innis.
