Background

For anybody who wants to play a first level dweeb in the Riverdans. Low commitment, no impact on the actual campaign/storyline or history in the Steel Realms. No edge lordy BS, no fey patrons – just some locals seeking (or caught up in) adventure. I expect it will die an untimely death, but I’m just trying to scratch the gaming itch during this dry spell. Make up your character and tell everyone about them. I’ll post prompts here and you can Choose Your Own Adventure if you so choose. I’m thinking of this storyline as basically the opposite of Thug Life. Wholesome country folk. (Until they’re traumatized and corrupted into typical adventuring freaks.) Remember that characters (and gameplay) should be very low effort. Entire character sheet in 256 characters? Why not! On the fly equipment requisitions? Why not!

Spud Life: Tale

Adventure With:
Darby Oatsmith Borfup Alois Hammer

@ 7-2023 Start: You’re all more or less acquainted from crossing paths at the Storetower Inn, you local Bondeu crossroads pub & inn.

@Faith: Your attempts to garner interest in weekly services to Whelm have so far fallen on deaf ears, but perhaps some adventuring fame will get people interested.

All [about 7] of you happen to be sitting around the dining room of the Storetower Inn one evening in late summer when the doors are yanked open by Jeremiah Butternose, the son of old farmer Jedediah Butternose. He shouts “Help! Help! The side of a hill in our pasture collapsed and daddy’s prize calf Maisybelle fell down the hole! We’c’n hear ‘er cryin’ down there but we need help to get ‘er out!” Darby Oatsmith (NPC, but very obviously the DM’s PC) jumps up and says “Holy smokes guys! We should help! I have 50 feet of rope, but we might need a 10 foot pole, 20 feet of cord, or maybe some torches – does anybody have those?”

Borfup: Someone grab an ax. We can cut branches as we go. I assume the barn has more rope. Let’s try and get a couple of plow horses too. If we have to pull the cow out of the hole. I’ll talk to some farmers about that and see if we can borrow them

It’s on! Borfup, Alois, Darby, [an unnamed possible Arabus character], a wispy ghostlike breath of air that might have been Sean, and likely commentary from Lamont (barring an actual fake character) down their respective ale/cider/fermented milk, stand up, and tell Jeremiah to lead the way!

The Innkeep says “Grab what tackle you need from the stables!” and a local teamster offers to bring his 2 mules to help – “Sorry I don’t have any horses but these mules can pull a ton”.

It’s about a half mile to the lane that leads up to the Butternose house where Farmer Jedediah is doing a lot of hand-wringing. It’s a little bit ramshackle but not badly kept farm. “Gosh golly thanks indeed for coming so quickly! I’ll lead you to the pasture where Maisybelle fell down the hole! I can still hear her calling but we better go quick in case she’s hurt!”

> Gather up everyone and tools. Ask the farmer if it’s safe for us or will we need any equipment?

Sho’nuff, you’ve gathered up whatever you think you need (within reason); axe, shovel, couple hundred feet of rope, improvised torches that will probably injure you, spare boards and branches, some leather harness/tack bits and bobs. (Basically anything you want that you’d normally find in a farm and rural setting.)

Farmer Butternose doesn’t know much. He’s not aware of caverns or sinkholes in the area previously; but in this case it seems like a small hole collapsed into a hillside, just big enough for a calf to fall into. The afternoon is wearing on, but even with daylight he couldn’t really see anything down the hole – just a sort of earthen sinkhole into darkness. (The calf doesn’t sound too far away.) The hole is only about a quarter mile from the steading, in one of the pastures.

Assuming you head out there, it’s pretty straightforward: Shallow hillside, grass pasture, and a hole next to some low brushy plants.

@Borfup: Well, I trust to my faith. I’ll go in front, but I assume the farmer will lead us there

Yes, the farmer will lead the way. Nothing of note on arrival, standing back 10’ from the hole you can faintly hear bit of braying from the calf.

Borfup, secured by a safety line, crawls forward to look into the hole. Below the sod is a rocky layer and mostly vertical tunnel that bends a bit. It looks like a natural cavern that had been covered over by plants and grass, and happened to collapse under the weight of the calf. A torch dropped in bounces past the bends and disappears. There’s a bit of flickering visible but the torch can’t be seen, and the calf brays a bit louder.
