Duelist Doublet (of the merchant cities)

Steel Realms

The Duelist Doublet (also called the ‘Duelist’s Ward’) was a style of front armor used by many professional duelists in the Merchant Cities (both north and south). Its use began around CY 6900 and its popularity peaked around CY 8500, and then fell out of favor as realm-wide prohibitions on dueling came into play. Prior to this, this fashion style was a part of the “gentleman’s” code of dueling and for a while a universally popular Fashion in the Steel Realms. It was typically adorned with flashy trinkets to dazzle and impress, and somewhere upon it was some sort of tabulation representing the number of duels and the wearer wins. At the time, the vast majority of duels were not to the death, and more of a sport on some places. Nowadays, it is really only seen in the merchant cities themselves, and mostly in Poelitz (south) or Karolak (north) and seen as a throwback or retro style. The family or personal crest or symbol was often burned into the back or front of it.

The doublet itself was made of hard leather and the cheapest silk and covered only the front torso of the duelist to protect from blows in one on one combat. It is the equivalent of a front-facing breastplate.

Common Properties: It has roughly half the cost as leather armor.

  • Flimsy Resilience: It has 1 Resilience, must be used before underlying armors, and cannot be repaired.
  • Intimidating Style: As a serious duelist accouterment, it often assisted to intimidate opponents.
  • Reduced Agility: Although it was designed for duelists, it was a bit bulky and lowered the flexibility of motion for all but the most agile.
