Dez Kolci, Conjurer of Rhyl

Source: Dez Kolci, Conjurer of Rhyl is a key character from part of the Transformation of Crestwold (Campaign Arc) pt. 2. There is a chance that he becomes a recurring enemy of the party from the Troubles at the Silver Mine of Gnaefor Ridge scenario.

History

Background: Charlatan

Current/Recent History

Dez came from somewhere north, seeking opportunities. He bought the lease on the Bladden Silver Mine area of Gnaefor Ridge; He taken over the operation in CY 9164 and volume has gone down. Its legit that the vein is running dry and needs significant investment from the scarecrow crew its got, in order to get going again. At first Dez merely bought a stake in it, but then bought the entire lease in 9165 and has been running it since.

Past/Background History

He was part of an militant adventuring band that was eventually driven out of Rhyl. They had taken up residence along the Red March and were exploiting recruits as they traveled to and from North Gate Garrison, through over-charging and making non-existent charges to the Duke’s forces they were contracted with. Technically most of what they were doing was not illegal, but the Duke of Rhyl wanted them out. When the band ambushed and killed adventurers on their way back from North Gate Garrison, the Duke’s men hunted them down. Eventually his four other brethren were killed and he fled.

He fled west and south and ended up in Dunstrand under the name “William Dez”. He bought the interest in the mine for a year then the entire mine. He sensed an opportunity. He summons lemures to do the really risky work, and their deaths mean nothing to him. He had to fire some of the crew, and sacrificed a pair of them after ambushing them leaving. After a year, he sensed that he was close to The Deeping, and turned the mining into another direction but the vein dried up. He has been able to persist the lemure summonings for work in the mines by sacrificing some miners he fired to the dark masters of the fiendish entities. He is now mining back towards it, hoping to make a large load and let the miners die and get out of the area.

History Insights from __ (PC Trade Contact)

He is from Rhyl, not the merchant cities. Volume has gone down 10% to most, in reality 20%. It actually went up for a short while (few months) significantly (like double output) then has gradually slipped. No new workers were hired, in fact a few were let go and a few left because of strange happenings in the mine. It is believed he can summon creatures to work the most dangerous parts of the mine. There have been rumors of a a couple of young men who went to work there never returning to Torrelson’s Ford during the last year (normally they would have had a break).

Exit plan from the Bladden Mines

IF he has to flee, he will seek to get back to the mining camp; He use his remaining summons to tie up the party, and flee in any way possible – conjuration ticks, stealth, etc. Once down int he mining camp, he will go to his secret chamber under the general store and gather his tomes and supplies. Then he will use his Bestial Effigy of Darupet, make it giant (riding sized) and climb of the broken cliff face and than down the ridge line toward the west and the Black Shore – going north into more populous lands and getting lost.
