The primary lands bordering the swamp are mostly abandoned or given up on as unreliable (though every so often – about every 20 years or so – a small portion of the floodplain will drain and be settled). Only small communities of fishermen (often referred to as “barge-rats”) live near the shores, and the village life is difficult for the majority of their beds and structure need to float to survive the rains and tides.
