CY 7488 The Lich Lords Attempt to Take the Entire Northlands

The Desire: One among the Lich Lords wanted to invade the strange mountain area of ‘Illyndriata Blue’ – A rumored place in the NW of the realms between the city of Thurlow and Kaald. It was said that all soldiers and expeditions vanished while seeking it. It is said to be a kingdom filled with powerful ancient beings that flew on strange wings, gold flowed in the rivers, and fathomless power was said to exist there. Another Lich Lord wanted his own kingdom in the west – on the shores of the distant sea. The idea was to consolidate the north and put Kaald in a vise to wipe it out for good.

The Culmination: For hundreds of years, a legion of skeletons was slowly assembled in the earth near Thurlow. Their main army struck from the east, to draw away the forces of Kaald. The first Bone Plague Army (first grave quake) was called forth and marched from the west, hoping to trap the forces of Kaald in a pincer. However, quick on their heels was The King of Stillness, oath-breaker of Dundaria once set to feed the inhabitants on Dundaria and now the spirit of vengeance for Fallen Dundaria – Theodrose. Once again their former servants will lay waste to their forces.

The Battle: The forces of Kaald and others turned west instead to smashed the Bone Plague Army in a hammer and anvil maneuver with the recently risen King of Stillness – Thedrose the Spectre Lord at the Battle of Sunsplint Fields. The name was the name given to a set of rolling fields that glittered in the early stages of the Fangedfrost as its early tendrils crept west and it seemed like the rays of the sun itself hung frosted in the air. Facing the combined might of both living and the undead of the King of Stillness, the Lich Lords retreated back east, along with the bitter wind of the their frozen curse. They were harried and their once great force was drastically diminished.

The King of Stillness vs. Bone Plague Army

All of the king’s bannermen and retainers remembered their oaths to protect the innocent and defend the land. All walked forth as an army, and using his faint connection to the Lich Lords to sense their original animating force, tracked the Bone Plague Army and as it came forth, it was destroyed and every bone broken – the ghouls feasted on the marrow. The 3 priestesses gave their lives to stop the plague. After the shattering of bone, a great priestess of Merkaine stood between the new king and the living who had fought at the periphery. The north, she decreed, would always be able to call upon Theodrose, the Spectre Lord, King of The Stillness. A true castle was built, though it needed few amenities. The bodies of the risen and his bannermen were clothed in the ancient colors and symbols of Dundaria. A great hall was made for receiving visitors – as if he were a living king. The Necromancers of the Narcosa Guild at Juniper were set to maintain vigil, and do what they could. The priestess of Merkaine, walked into the fire of that hall carrying the king’s sword, burned alive, and the fire burns to this day on his blade. Onto the blade the fire went, to be wielded by the king – a symbol of the shadow life she had restored to them. Her last breaths were spent proclaiming not to disturb the Silent Army, but call upon them when the living are greatly threatened only and the new sovereign land is menaced by outsiders.

The Aftermath: It is generally accepted that the Lich Lords mainly failed because their power was so diminished. Creating the Bone Plague Army, moving the Fangedfrost that far west, and sustaining their normal armies made them significantly weaker. The Fangedfrost was never seen to move in its entirety again.
