Items made from Beryllide

Steel Realms

Beryllium is referred to as “Beryllide“, and is one of the most in-demand metals in the realms. The biggest mines and refining is done by Beryl (the “Soul of the South”) – where it gets its name from. Several groups have figured out the metallurgy to add it to steel and other metals to craft exceptional items, many of which are considered priceless. Little armor is made from it due to its expense, it is mostly weapons. Generally, Beryllide items are lighter and easier to use for those who are skilled in handling them, they do not rust or corrode.

Beryllide is extremely toxic to work with, resulting in short term and long term health concerns. Ducateon seem resistant to its worst effects, though avoid making armor from it as well. Beryllide is toxic, but the Ducateon learned to process Beryllide in the old Empire of Synedcia. The weapons create long lasting wounds. Synedcia conquered the surrounding lands with it. When Sun Stealer unleashed the Bale Fire, demons were resistant and overcame this edge they believed they had. Many weapons were lost in the dust of the south. Inhabitants of the southern wastes developed resistance over time, but were sickly for thousands of years.

  • Berylak Armaments – Umbak in the heartlands
  • Beryledge – Beryl in the south; Also called “black steel”, the city of Beryl uses carbide material in forging weapons.
  • Toprag – Ancient (lost) Bronzemen process; Bronzemen bronze is Beryllium copper/bronze/zirconium. Hard as steel, resists acid and heat, non conductive or magnetic, no sparks. The sacred fire of the forges of Bronzemen was said to come from lava, stoked by the genies of the earth. Blood Bronze Blades: These swords were made with powerful natural dweomers of anima, metallurgy, and blood magic. Once the Bronzemen discovered their deepest secrets, no more were made for the outside world.

  • Prinzedge – Merchant Cities (Karolak/Poelitz); Blades made in the merchant cities (mostly north) are generally versatile enough to be used 1 or 2 handed, and balanced more 2 2 handed use.

A History of Beryllium Armaments

The Bronzemen of the Fahyl Forest were known for their bronze-beryllium weapons that were prized as much as Ducateon made weapons. The coloration of bronze was especially prized due to its luster and color compared to plain steel. The elite units of the Duchy of Fahyl got the majority of these weapons – and used them against the encroaching Sea-King empire making its way up the rivers of the south from the sea. Umbak long wanted the beryllium mines in the heart of Fahyl, but every attempt to scout or divine its source failed – like it did for every ally and foe of the Bronzemen at the time. This was a major motivation for Umbak’s [failed] attempt to seize the lands they left behind when the Bronzemen marched north.
