There are many ruins unexplored in the north; Shattered Cities are common in the old kingdom lands and the current Hinterlands.
Last Ruler Before Fangedfrost:
Law: High Kings, Dundaria Kings, cultural traditions taken as law.
Defenses: Military, Mountain Stewards of Dundaria
Military: The king’s soldiers have several rallying points throughout the kingdom, and several small keeps that serve to protect trade routes and supply storage and staging. Each noble is expected to quarter a garrison in every major city, and provide for it. The military is mostly volunteers, but all noble families are required to send their children for 2 years of service – be it logistics, medicine, or fighting.
The last nominal rulers of the Kingdom of Dundaria were Catherine of Avendale and Derkstrom (House D’mancio) II of Garmenhas. They became royalty when King Uulieen D’Menco and his wife Griselia died in combat – last true ‘King in the North’ to take to battle against the tide of undying. The others of the royal blood line had taken the field – maiden and master a like, in their battle gear to defend their homelands from the tide of walking death. The ruling families were put to death, slowly, by the lords of winter. Only one of the royal household was known to survive. Severa Damenco, wife to Derkstrom’s brother Istvan lived. She fled, pregnant, into the cold land beneath a darkening sky. Never far behind her were her pursuers, but she knew the land well. In their desperation, the lords of undead conjured forth Yukota, the Spirit of Never-Ending-Death. This gruesome entity set about pursuing her, leaving a blighted trail of putrefied land all the way to north gate garrison, were he was put down by the Heroes of the Realm at the time. Unknown to all, that which he perused fled south, deep into the forest of Rhyl. For ages the blood line was passed down, the duchy of Rhyl home for many years, until the lords of winter sent minions after them again. They fled north, into the wastes of no-mans land and the conquered north of Kalascor. The royal (high tongue) dialect of Dundorii was passed down from each generation – the only living practitioners outside the scholars of the north. Blacksmithing became the trade of the family. The youngest son of Ruth and Derken Damenco was Connail – he was the first to leave their refuge in the north.
Grave Ice is enchanted ice which never melts. It is said that wherever the Lich Lords skin touches natural surfaces, a sheen of grave ice forms. Grave Ice has an evil aura (if detected for), and does 1 damage to living creatures that touch it, each round. It cannot be melted, though it can be shattered
into crystals (Grave Crystals; sharp as glass) and disposed of. When covering surfaces, it almost feels like it tries to cause things moving over it to slip and fall – even animated dead find it hard to navigate. Only true undead are immune to its effects. Grave Ice is used for
many things by the winter host, who lack crafters. Their fell magics are able to shape Grave Ice into many forms.
A few of the Walking Pinelings still stand vigil.
