The Mapmaking Process for a World Map – Feb. 2017
Cornelia Yoder
1. Overall Style — this sets the stage for everything else including overall look, color scheme,
realistic or graphic, scale of the map, level of detail, and such things.
2. Size — this is where dimensions and pixel resolutions are chosen, depending on what the map will be used for (printing in color, greyscale, black and white, online, etc).
3. Land shape — this defines the land and ocean areas, the continents, islands, big lakes, etc.
4. Terrain — this is where you decide what mountains look like, what forests look like, rivers,
deserts, etc., including shapes and colors.
5. Location — this is where we actually place the map components such as mountains, forests,
rivers and lakes, swamps, towns, roads, regional borders and so on.
6. Labels — this is where we choose what to name, choose names, and position the labels on the map, including fonts and colors.
7. Decoration — this is where additional decorative elements such as titles, borders, legends,
scales, etc., are added.
