i20(tm) Level 1 to Level 2
At level 1, the characters are given much a much more forgiving approach as the players and/or characters are supposed to be learning. These represent an edge for PCs, not for NPCs. This is to enhance survivability.
Benefits for Level 1 Characters
- ZERO HP ZONE: A nebulous zone of enhanced survivability where a PC reaches “zero” HP and is NOT dead or making death saves or losing HP. They are unconscious. This is always true of level 1 characters. I mostly leave this in place, even as PCs progress in levels.
- No Major Wounds: Going below zero has no effect other than death saves and a longer healing cycle.
- Some assumed party synergy; Not having to roleplay all sharing of information or make checks.
- More generous rewards or NPC interactions; GM remembering some of the basics and reminding the PCs.
- Less mandatory tracking of supplies.
- Luck – missing something by 1 might still Grant success.
- Shared burden – if a PC dies, the group can decide to have them live instead but take on a temporary wound or bad luck. This is generally granted at higher levels, but the penalties go significantly up to change story outcomes on this scale.
