Back Story

Crebs grew up in Dunstrand and joined the penitent of Darupet when he was 13. After standard service in the green church, at 15 he chose his patron within the Great Beasts clan, Rastur. He made a pilgrimage to Beryl, in the far south where his sect is popular. He served his acolyte years in the Border Kingdoms under his teacher – Chistos Savo. As is tradition, he gave up his last name to take the name of the holy oasis of Savo, where Rastur is said to speak to his followers and two great prides of his creatures make their home. He returned “home” and sought out a pride to perform his service to. The barony of Lilymarch in the earldom of Bar-Innis had need of a defender as the local swamp and river fishermen were under attack. Many said it was the Orrish of Dwindor swamp tangling the nets and killing the fishers… but no bodies were found to confirm. Crebs pledged his protection and the folk fed and housed him. Their nets would often be torn, traps ruined, and sometimes their equipment sabotaged. Crebs stayed awake for three days straight under a turned over fishing boat on the edge of the swamp before finally encountering the culprit one night. It was a pair of goblins, coming at night. He cut them off from returning to their skiff and forced them to surrender or die. It turns out one soke Gladnorian enough to communicate. They wailed about a beast that was taking their food supply, that they had not killed any human as the great Ork shaman of Dwindor, One-Claw, had forbidden it. They were merely trying to reduce the human take to leave some for them. Sensing a greater threat, he asked the goblins to take him to the lair of the beast. It turns out it was a moorcat that had taken to living in the water – completely unnatural for them. He sought guidance from his deity, who said the beast had been driven mad by a poison in the swamp and that though it was a great cat, it’s time had come. He snuck up on the savage beast and called down the power of his god – seeking quick destruction of the pitiful creature. The battle was fierce. Crebs almost lost one arm, and one of the goblins was killed. In the end, he was forced to fight in the form of his god to the death with the creature. When it was done, he grabbed the neck of the creature and tore off its head. The remaining goblin left on the skiff, and Crebs swam back for hours to the east. He arrived after sunrise, changing his shape in the water and dragging his wounded body and grisly trophy onto the shore where the villagers ran to his aid. It took him three weeks to heal. His initial mission of protection fulfilled to his god, he was free to wander. Before he left, he was asked by the goblins to travel to them (blindfolded, at night) to be honored. He stayed with them for 2 weeks, and was given a sturdy spear he named “Long Fang” – made from the sacred wood of the Pranin Moorswood. He traveled east, into The Riverdans. Moving through the impoverished territories, he came to believe the people needed his help – but they disliked outsiders. He heard rumors of a place called The Grimdowns… one time the beautiful Athla hill country, now under some curse. While others kept away, he ran towards the danger. A strange pall did hang over the region – no trade was flowing. The road into its capital was empty and still. He marched into it, hoping to help resolve the situation.
