Joined up as one of the “new breed Gallants”: Died defending Womac Tower AGAINST the Umbakian invaders.
bastard sword from Gwinnish encampment as reward – given up as part of tithe.
When the Gallants snuck into Womac Tower to rescue the child of light, Darian decided to stay behind with Gale to bolster the defences and help the tower hold out for a bit longer. He gave Kanis Rift’s Edge to prevent the Umbakians from taking it – a sign he knew his fate was sealed.
Especially as an Umbakian traitor – he felt the need to punish his ex-countrymen for the illegal invasion of a allied territory.
Having been forced to march out of Dunstrand (nominally for the crusade against the Orrish of Dwindor swamp) in shame, your unit and Sir Innolas – the knight you served – were punished by spending grueling time in the most uninteresting places – the coast of Umbak.
Its rocky with no place to land and Umbak has nearly no nazy. Eventually you got restless, got in more fights, and were kicked out of the Umbakian regular army at 18 – an undisciplined, angry young man.
Your promising career that your father – the patriarch of the Felloreyes family) – had assured you of vanished… yea, your older brother got that squire position to your uncle you had always admired.
Your name tarnished, your family shamed and unaccepting you were driven out of Umbak by political means. You drifted north, hoping to make you way through Dunstrand to The Merchant Cities of the North where your skills would be valuable against the Gwinnish – who you had itched to fight and were bound to until your cousin put in a good word and your father’s influence got you transferred to
Sir Innolas, vassal to the lords sent to Dunstrand to wage war on the Orrish and extend Umbakian hegemony. Making your way through Dunstrand you ran out of money in the very place you had fled from – Dogwood Flats.
Down on your luck and needing employ, you discovered the enemy unit which had turned the tide in Dunstrand – The Gallants – had permanently set up shop in the area. What the hell!? Why not? They had fought well against Umbak, and you had no more allegiance to Umbak –
what had they done for you? Where had that loyalty gotten you? Your own experience training Umbakian spear levy and service as a Page made your skills valuable – no one seemed to bat an eye that you served against them once – that kind of acceptance felt pretty nice after your own family rejected you.
Rumors in the barracks is that they were selecting some candidates to take the oath of loyalty to some lord, or a wizard, or a god if you believe rumors. All you know is that there is some group being put together. Your Umbakian discipline serves you well and you stand out.
You are billeted after 3 weeks with a different group – a group lead by someone too bloody nice. Lt. Jack – or just Jak. He’s not a bad sort, but seems like he’s too nice to be a leader – at least in the Umbakian army. After a week you can’t help but like him – he gets dirty with the rest when you show them all how to make a proper army campsite –
once again drawing on your time in the disciplined Umbakian army. His aide de camp is some sort of boy, or girl.. you can’t tell. Damn its a weird group, more non-humans than you’ve ever seen, but you got a good feeling about it after a couple weeks of training together in the misery of Dogwood Flats. Jak seems to have everyone on his side.
