Kelly > Thinking about what you said about developing luck as a skill. While I am very against that specific approach, its counter to roleplaying and letting dice rolls catch the failures, I was thinking of something it might work with in talking to Arabus. He wants to go back to giving AP for good ideas – that still seems too disconnected to me – ideas help you live, the incentive there is to rely less on chance and roleplay more.
but, i was toying around with the idea of “Insight” – and running it through the education options, and learning (it’s already there buried in the text). It could also dovetail nicely with divine guidance and psychic probability glimpse – as well as astrology and pattern invoking… basically a “get a clue” about something. Let AP simulate the ability to take advantage of luck in action, but also have a trait or power that allows a character to “get a clue” about something – get lucky on remembering, understanding, or learning something that can translate into action. A flash of insight can mean making the right choice. It may be that thats what the good luck trait becomes, and AP is nothing more than a mechanic reward. anyway, interesting to contemplate.
Larry > Not so much as a skill but an attribute (like iron will)…
Kelly > yea, either way, an increasing high or low cost ability that absolves the players and group of having to roleplay and relying on pools of re-rolls or random bonuses goes in the opposite direction of the vision. It also promotes chaos and pulls opposite of group play where the reliance is on the plan and the interaction bonuses and benefits. It promotes players kicking in doors and thinking “forget the party – we got loads of luck”. And archetypes frankly should get the focus on this this, but on stuff related to the archetype, not applying to random stuff. theres enough luck in the good luck trait as it is… Insights allows refill of the “fortune” pools might be better off, and tieing in with all the other mechanics i noted. If i work something up, can you preview it?
