Dunstrand has a lottery draft due to the constant number of long standing engagements with its opposition to the north and south (and internal). As one of the most staunch supporters of the High King, the Duke keeps a trained levy in case of hostilities and one of the nearby Pacification Garrisons (for High King’s Army) needs to be manned. This agreement and trust goes back 500 years and is one of the points of pride for Dunstrand, and integrated into their oaths for military service. One unforseen outcome of having a better trained militia than untrained levy troops is that of more robust people, and having less children as the health and welfare is generally better.
Basic Military Service is 2 Years in the Dunstrand levy, as a form of a Time of Service. The break-in (basic training) camp is 3 months in eastern County Faer. All those that go on to enlist in the Ducal army or local lord’s service begin with this same training. It is the one thing that serves as a somewhat even playing field for non-prevalent races and cultures inside of Dunstrand.
There is a chance for each year served that the character will come out with a Horrible Wound. Successive years in service are easier to leave unwounded – the experience reduces the chance.
* The character can use their Wisdom (Survival) bonus applied once, only if the character has the skill.
