DnD 2024/5.5 Response

After purchasing and reading the PHB 2024, I have decided not to adopt that version as a new official foundation for i20™. This is likely to be the last version of ©DnD that will be evaluated as such. It is also notedly, the last planned version to operate under the OGL, anything further being likely to be legally prohibited anyways. The continued development materials of I-20™ reflects my continuing desire to not focus on a set of mechanics, and instead spend my time and energy as I get older on world building, as well as adventure writing and GMing that in turn provides an additional prioritized elements of world building related to it. The biggest reasons for not adopting it (and there are many nuanced ones as well) is that the overall direction goes against the Incarna principles reflecting role-playing being more of a challenge and not a cheap expression of literary heroism. Specific more realistic elements (reflected in the “gritty realism” approach found in the DnD 53 DMG) drive Incarna do not fit well in the new 5.5 mechanics. AS always, there is no right or wrong, a game system should be chosen forr its ability for the top of stories you want to tell. Most can be adapted by a competent GM – the question is which version gets you closer without doing as much work. In this case, 2024 PHB makes MORE work to adapt it to tell my type of stories than taking the final set 2014 PHB based rules.

  • The power level was significantly increased for starting characters.
  • The overall empowerment (not agency) reflecting the ‘you can be uber-capable’.
  • The lack of change in the skill system.

I will be focusing on the integral elements of class and race initially, to have them ready by the current goal of February 1st, 2025. This is my DnD 2024/5.5 Response… 10/11/2024

Immediate Steel Realms Living World Impact – Races/Species

As of right now, the human variant of 5e is altered. All new characters that want to take the human variant do not start with a feat, they start with Dynamic Familiarity; This is noted and updated in the Characters of the Steel Realms. Im working on a lot of the text for these pages. The offset to this is that all non-human races will have both bonuses AND Penalties to their starting attributes. This will be posted in the future.
