Background

Morgan Newsmith was, by trade, a man of violence and few words – it was how he grew up on the streets and survived. In his urchin days of running with a gang, he was the food taster to make sure the rest did not get sick off whatever they could scrounge. He grew up in West River Run, in the Barony of ___, on the border with the Tarmysian Peninsula. Itss long been the site of warfare, and he grew up impressed into Baron Veff’s levy, then he hired on as a soldier in the Baron Olsen’s Gillman Brigade in service to the count of West River Run. His ruthlessness made following his career path easy. He followed orders and executed them with harshness that gave him a reputation. Eventually he found himself in the Baronial Honor Guard, touring the baron’s lands as a part of his protection detail. In one town there was a riot from food shortages. In the midst of his anger, he slew indiscriminantly. When it was done, a dozen unarmed townsfolk lay dead, including a child he had personally killed. Seeing a scapegoat, the Baron ordered him arrested, and he feld into the town, hiding for days. He finally entered the church of the Lightbringer faith and held the priestess of Aerna hostage while the others prepared a horse and rations. Seeking to flee at mid-night’s watch, he waited. In that time, the priestess Helen talked to him. It caused something in him to snap. For the first time in years, he slept. The priestess did not turn him in, and he slept for 10 hours, into the next day’s light. It was there that he walked away from his past. Weeks passed, and his conversations with the Lightbringer faith caused more and more introspection. In time, he began to study the faith, and see what it could do for the community. He found a way of redeeming himself. For years he studied and served, taking the name Christoff Lightbearer (the last a generic “adopted” name by those coming to the Lightbringer faith). Trips were being made to the south, across the river into Richfield and Bar-Innis. The priestess was hesitant to send him along with though, for fear of awakening his old emtions. The constant war with Gwinn saw all manner of mercenaries gone-bad prowling the roads for easy takings – many times the followers of Aerna had been ambushed and had their goods taken over the years. She finally gave in to his pleading. In the back of his mind, he felt if anything were to happen to his fellow followers, he could help with his experience. In fact, he made several trips to the town of Braddon Bog, where a tiny community of Lightbringers was mostly surrounded by those of the Wyld Faith. The community probably had grown up around Umbakian blood when they were trying to settle the region thousands of years ago. Scholars of the Lightbringers from West River Run were journeying to The Companions Library – a new library raised up in an older church that had once been dedicated to the Lightbringers. He made friends in this community. At the age of 30, he was happy – he was courting Adia, one of his fellow Followers of Light, he was part of a community, and even a traveler of sorts. The endurance he developed from his previous life made him a good fellow to have on the road. In late CY 9168 he made his last trip out of West River Run. His group ran into brigands. He had before, but robbery was not the only thing they attempted this time. Rape was about to happen to his betrothed, and everything went red. He does not remember what happened next, but caught pieces of it from the survivors soon after. There were 5 of them, and three followers he was traveling with – escorting a scholar of the Lightbringers to the library as he had often done. When it was over, all five brigands lay dead, as well as the scholar and his betrothed. The others fled soon after in fear of what he had become. He realized that his life, once again, was over as he had known it. Before news could travel, he set off to get out of West River Run, he continued on to Braddon Bog. There he found refuge in the congregation there for a few days. However, he overheard that someone was reporting him to authorities in West River Run, even though they had no jurisdiction in Bar-Innis, the trust was broken. He left at night, in the rain and dark, and threw himself upon the mercy of the gods. In the darkness was a small flame. He followed the flame, and it led to a shrine, a shrine that was dedicated to Merkaine, the goddess of fire – one of the four elemental goddesses. He collapsed inside the the safety and warmth of the shrine. He was found by David Hevgrim, priest of the goddess. He was in a fevered state for days, having caught cold from the rain and cold weather when he left the church of the Lightbringers. In his dreams, he grappled with his identity and purpose, with Merkaine offering him a new path. Over the course of the week, he was tended to by the priest, who saw him to be in a sacred fevered state. He sweat off the pounds he had put on in his soft life, and was reborn his old self – but tempered by the flame of the goddess! His meager powers once commanded by the Lightbringers had been reborn as those of Merkaine. Resigned to make a new life as her Flame in the Darkness, he made his one speech to the small congregation there. It turns out the Gallants had once sponsored the church of the goddess and there were still armaments left. When Morgan left, he was an impressive figure, drawing a crowd and causing a stir. The rumor mill was rife. It boiled down to a call going out, nobles, soldiers, bards and heralds were assemblin in Mev for some announcement from the Duke himself. Assuming the next stage of the war with Gwinn was to be announced, that was the place to be. Morgan set off for Mev, the capital of the earldom of Bar-Innis and the heart of western Dunstrand.
