Greafears Maw (broken peak of Scar Flow)

Steel Realms

Geo-Location: Duchy of Dunstrand Greafears Maw was once a mountain peak in the Westmarch of Dunstrand, now is a broken outcrop no higher than 100m above the average water level in Scar Flow, on the edge of Coldstream Channel. Its said to be home to pirates and scoundrels but technically claimed by Loamwold, off the area separating the shoreline of the Whistling Coast of Maldoolin and the Hoolip Coast of Pranin Moorswood. It was broken long ago, before the settling of Dunstrand Vale. It was said its shattered hillside feature was the result of a battle between gods before The Godspeak Accord. Despite the allure of possible Primaeth, its reputation of violent tides and lightning storms has either killed or driven off seekers. From its caves and broken rocks there is sometimes a blood like flow of liquid – the source of one of the many reasons folk avoid Dwindor and Scar Flow.

Rubble Shore

Mouth of the Maw

This is a passage at water level that seems like it might be inviting as a port during storms. It is filled with jagged rocks, said to be impassable and cold winds pour from it, and locals say many a storm starts above it in the jagged cliff.

Throat of the Maw

Greater Sea Cave

Stairs to the Eye of the Storm

Leads to the top of the Eye of the Storm. It is a treacherous “stairway” twisting up a shaft, broken stairs, gaps, and jagged rock protrusions everywhere.

Eye of the Storm

A geological feature that appears to be an eye, facing south, at the top of the outcrop.

Knowledge is broken down by ease of discovery/accessibility. If nothing is indicated, assume it is Pervasive.

Pervasive Knowledge / Very Easy Difficulty

Pirates have attempted to use its features as a safehold from pursuers. But its violent weather and strange happenstances always destroy them or drive them away – it spares no one.

Common Knowledge / Easy Difficulty

It once held a small enclave of pirates, but the halflings never went near it because of the constant rock falls and bad feelings, and red waters that bleed out of it on low tides.

Uncommon Knowledge / Average Difficulty

It has long been put forward that there is a pirate steading is maintained within. There have been several attempts over the ages that mark this as true, but none have persisted long.

It is believed that whatever calamity befell Greafears Maw also was responsible for flattening the Badgers Back plateau of Maldoolin.

Scarce Knowledge / Hard Difficulty

This was actually where a storm giant was broken and cast down in battle against cloud giants in ancient lore. It is now a site that reeks of violence and blood. It took days of agony for the giant to die, his spine broken. His blood stained the rocks permanently and he called desperately to his mother the storm queen to aid him – but he was hidden by the magic fog of his enemies.
