Culley Staff (Scriveners Ward)

Steel Realms
Value: 10,000 silver crowns

These minor magic items are extremely common in the Steel Realms. They come in all manner of sizes really – from walking stick to full staff, staff is a bit of a misnomer. They are easy to make and infuse with magical ability. Many rulers visiting the homes of the druids, or those doing a favor for the Wyld faith are gifted with such – they have proliferated over time and are passed down or passed on as gifts.

Common Abilities: Those made after the original have the simple ability to hold about a dozen scrolls inside them safely and dryly. They can be commanded to sprout a large leaf which can serve as an umbrella over the wielder.

Original Versions: Whatever the name these staves have (some refer to them as Staff of Abeyance or even “Demon Bane”), they are all the same. They are commonly referred to as Scriveners Ward. Each staff was made by one of the 7 main library guild of Port Towne. They each have a burn mark identifying which library they belong to. Of the 7 Towne Library Guilds, three of them had an additional detection capability placed on them by House Malor of Dusntand. These were given to the young apprentices to assist with the coral and command of the many Fiends summoned to reveal and expand upon the knowledge sought by others. Normally they are not allowed beyond the districts of Port Towne – but over the centuries a few mages have managed to swipe them, and several have been broken in combats. It is thought only 3 remain, all of them once enchanted by House Malor of Dunstrand. Originally made by the druid Culley Helmain, from trees in the Fertile Crescent said to be seedlings of a elven Life-Tree.
