This organization is part of the Mercenary Guild system. It is a Mercenary Company out of the Aergash Northguild (Merchant Cities of the North). The Bear Kinds were a band of Dwarven mercenaries that formed in Juniper.
The company was defeated outside of Thurlow in CY 9141 by the forces of Gwinn. They were thought to be wiped out to the last – baggage train included.
The company took whatever jobs they could, traveling slowly south. Their goal was Thurlow, and perhaps even to Karolak.
Neither outcasts or exiles, these were simply those who wanted to forge a path out of their cold homeland in CY 9126. They left their fortresses in the north, some of them who were widowers even taking their children. A baggage train of about the same number accompanied them.
