Education in the Riverdans

Steel Realms

The Riverdans are one of the few places that has some form of public facing education. Some of this tradition is reflected in the larger Dunstrandian education. The familial sponsorship is a legacy of the culture of the Fallen East. The places set aside for this are known as Waurstweigs – these are now few and far between in the Riverdans.

The Waurstweigs: Each of the ruling bloodlines in the Riverdans maintains a hall of records (“Waurstweigs”) – many in disrepair. They are obligated in the charter for the Riverclaims to offer the services of a scribe and teacher for their communities. Often this consists of one and one to two apprentices and nothing more. School houses are often used as dorms for them, and they are barely paid enough to live and work on. Technically this public education is available to everyone, but it is a shadow of what it once was. Now only some children in the major cities were the record halls are attend classes – but it does happen in these few remaining places. Classes are rarely more than 10-15 children at a time. The ancient language of Dundarian is still practiced here, and used to cipher the communications of the Trail Doves.

  • Trail Doves: Within each Waurstweigs is technically the services of the Trail Doves, with a modest Trail Dove rookery. They do not deliver any messages or heave dealings with House Malor – though they know they are being watched regardless and some few have a means of contacting an agent of the ducal mage house in emergency.
