Background

Vik Reiban is the shell of of what once a baker, father, and husband. It was all taken from him in an instant when the path his family was taking during a pilgrimage to the shrine of Vespa in Bevmordain (across the southern hills from county Faer) was caught in a flash flood. His family was all killed, and he was beaten senseless against the rocks and near drowned. He awoke to the sounds of a goblin gnawing on his leg, believing he was dead. His family and others had been washed into a gully and at night the Orrish had come out and thought they were all dead – easy prey. In a rage, he drew the goblin’s stone dagger and began to hew about him. He killed three goblins that day, and buried 8 bodies of travelers. He gave up his faith in Aerna and peace, his life as a baker, and instead vowed to follow the path of the blade.

Since that day, Vik has been hesitant to from close bonds, and has instead found solace in killing darkspawn wherever he can. He kept following warrior’s advice on where to find the most work killing darkspawn – making his way further east and north. After 2 years of serving in the hills as a guard, he sought his fortunes in the capital of Dunstrand – looking to join a larger band with more focus on his goal of dealing deal to the Orrish. He could find nothing else that was not faith oriented, and he had his share of faith, so he returned to the hills – where the darkspawn lurked.

After serving as a caravan guard in the route between Arminsted and Tamlbin he ended up in the city of Ashret in Rhyl. He came to the notice of the Viscount Yessel when working for a merchant, and on a particularly nasty encounter with brigands he took a spear through the thigh (in addition to other minor wounds) that would have killed a man – and kept fighting his opponent long enough to kill him. He bandaged his own wound in fornt of the stunned men, and passed out for a week. He was asked to join the guard of the Viscount on his reputation. There were always darkspawn lurking about along the Red March – trying to weaken materials and men going to North Gate and trying to steal goods and raid the lands of light and always targets for their never-ending hate. The Viscount was in charge of the Duke of Rhyl’s supply aid effort along the Red March and seemed a good and fair man, and the Lightbringers paid a good bounty when he brought in ears from his own time spent hunting along the hills and woods.

When the news of Viscount’s betrayal came, it was like a hammer blow to Vik… he felt he could trust no one. His hatred of Orrish vanished when he realized it was not the creatures themselves, but their natures and what they represented. When he saw what the Viscount unleashed on his troops, his worst fears were confirmed – worse than anything the darkspawn ever did was the destruction wrought by his cultists of Everdark when they slaughtered an entire garrison – only Vik and 3 others survived – a patrol caught in a downpour and late returning. Fueling his rage for revenge, he joined the forces seeking to attack the occupied garrison. The Sack of Causton Garrison is legendary – its savagery was like a disease that spread forth. No one who survived it came away unscathed – Vik was changed for life. As far away as Umbak tales have been told of the battle – the darkspawn, the Viscount, and their allies crucified to the last, laughing maniacally as they dead in the rising sun.
